The World Observed: Rembrandt, Rubens, and Claude
Jane Turner
Collector Eugene Thaw would have recognized a kindred spirit in the Dutch lawyer and amateur draftsman Jan de Bisschop (1628-1671), who criticized his fellow Dutch artists for their vulgar “Beggars, Brothels, Taverns, Tobacco-smokers, Fiddlers, nasty Children sitting on potty-chairs, and other things more filthy and awful.” Such Northern drawings of low-life peasant scenes are completely missing from the Thaw collection. Jane Turner, Head of Rijksprentenkabinet, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, will focus instead on drawings by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Claude—works that reveal the poetry of landscape and the power of the pen to convey the essence of a classical or biblical narrative.

This series is made possible by the Franklin Jasper Walls Lecture Fund.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669), Four Musicians with Wind Instruments, Thaw Collection.
