Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867)
View of Santa Maria Maggiore, ca. 1813–14
Graphite, pen and brown ink, brown wash
Signed and inscribed in graphite below at center, Ingres à Adele.

Like many foreign artists in Rome, Ingres explored
and sketched local monuments, such as St. Peter's
Basilica, the Palazzo Barberini, and Santa Maria
Maggiore. This drawing was likely executed in a
sketchbook that he carried with him to a favorite
vantage point on the Esquiline Hill. He precisely
rendered the church facade, also noting an exiting
procession.
