The old inscription on this drawing incorrectly refers to Piero della Francesca. Instead, the study probably belongs to a small group of drawings made in the 1490s by Parenzano depicting fantastic, all'antica subjects inspired by Andrea Mantegna's Triumphs of Julius Caesar cycle of paintings. Justifiably proud of his work, Mantegna produced a series of engravings after the canvases, which accounts for the rapid spread of their fame throughout Europe.
