Van den Eeckhout was one of Rembrandt's most talented and productive pupils. Although this is a work of Eeckhout's mature period, it attests to the strong impact of Rembrandt's style, especially in the dramatic shadows and variety of pen lines. This painterly study for van den Eeckhout's 1665 canvas (Pushkin Museum, Moscow) is striking in the simplicity with which the artist described forms and in its rich, colorful blend of media.
