Often considered a pair with Christ Presented to the People, this work depicts the moment of Christ's death and the emphatic reactions of the people who witness it. The kneeling centurion raises his arms in an act of recognition and obeisance, while other figures are fleeing or being led away in shock. In this exceptional impression of the first state, the surface tone left along the foreground and at the sides reinforces the effect of a central shaft of light.
