This portrait print, in rare first and second states, is the first that Rembrandt made after the Self-Portrait Leaning on a Stone Sill of 1639. Here he cast himself in quite a different role—an artist rather than a gentleman, busy at work in a dark, shadow-filled interior illuminated only by an open window. His expression is heavy with the cares of the world, as he firmly grasps his pen.
