Remarkable for its intensity of emotion and rich sfumato-like modeling in heavy charcoal, this drawing is a cartoon for the
head of the grief-stricken Mary Magdalene in the Entombment of Christ, a frescoed roundel from the portico of the basilica
of Sant’Andrea in Mantua, now in the Museo Diocesano. It reveals Correggio’s early understanding of the importance of
carefully planning a composition executed in the unforgiving fresco technique.
