This sheet is one of Caron’s six designs for the famous Valois tapestries now in the Uffizi. It depicts an elaborate water
spectacle at Bayonne to celebrate a historic meeting of the French and Spanish courts. The notables of both courts boarded
a magnificent boat in the shape of a castle and sailed through various canals to an island in the river, witnessing spectacles,
including a mock whale hunt, along the way. A banquet was served and a ballet performed before the royal party returned
as they had come.
