Richard Doyle (1824–1883)

Doyle embellished his weekly family letters in much the same style that would bring him fame as the principal illustrator of the magazine Punch during the 1840s. He sent these letters to his father, a prominent (though anonymous) political caricaturist. In this letter Doyle depicts visitors to the celebrated Westminster Hall cartoon exhibition of 1843, a competition called by Queen Victoria to promote English historical painting. It was after the exhibition was parodied in Punch that the word cartoon began to be associated with pictorial satire rather than preparatory drawings.
