This sheet and another, Joseph Interpreting Pharoah's Dream, form a pair in a series of twenty colorful, highly finished drawings on vellum executed between 1691 and 1696. Typical of van Mieris's paintings of the period, the biblical subject is set against a background with elements of classical architecture and ornament. The effect of the delicate stippling pays homage to the earlier generation of "fine" painters active in the artist's native town of Leiden.
