The Morgan Library & Museum invites applications for the position of Part-Time Reference Collection Cataloger. Reporting to the Head of the Reference Collection Department, this position performs full-level original cataloging and copy cataloging in multiple languages and formats, working closely with the Head of the Reference Collection and departmental staff. The cataloger also works on other special projects as assigned.
- Catalogs books, auction catalogs, electronic resources, and musical scores in multiple languages.
- Working on Voyager, the Morgan’s cataloging system, and the OCLC cataloging client, the cataloger upgrades existing records and creates original records in machine-readable (MARC21) format, in conformity with the cataloging rules AACR2 and RDA, and the Morgan’s own classification schedule.
- Maintains authority control on the Morgan’s catalog, searching the Library of Congress Name Authority File (NAF) and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) on OCLC.
- Creates inventories using Excel and other document software.
- Works on special projects as assigned by the head of the department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of machine-readable (MARC) cataloging protocols, and current cataloging rules and vocabularies; the ability to create and edit catalog records in multiple languages and formats.
- Experience searching a wide variety of library databases.
- The ability to catalog in different languages; knowledge of French or German desirable.
- Knowledge of art, history, literature, and the history of the book.
- Experience handling delicate library materials.
- The ability to work in a team environment.
- M.L.I.S. (Master’s Degree in Librarian and Information and Science.)
- Minimum of 2 years professional experience working in a research library setting.
$26 per hour, up to 10 hours per week
